SAN DIEGO -- The Red Cross is providing meals and places to stay for people who are fleeing the Angel Fire.Red Cross volunteers opened Ramona and Borrego Springs high schools for people fleeing the sudden fire, said Gayle Falkenthal, spokesperson for the Red Cross San Diego County chapter. At midnight, 30 people were at the Ramona High shelter, about 20 miles west of Julian. The Borrego Springs High had no evacuees, but roads between Julian and Borrego Springs were closed and Falkenthal said many residents used campers or recreational vehicles as shelter, parking wherever they could to stay away from smoke, Falkenthal said.
The Salvation Army served breakfast at 6:30 a.m. Sunday to occupants at the shelter, while many residents came to eat or take showers, then left for church, Falkenthal said."We're going to make sure we're there as long as people need us," Falkenthal said. "People try to maintain their normal routine."At 9 a.m., the sheriff's department held a briefing in Ramona for evacuees and Ramona residents, Lt. Mike McClain said.Persons with horses or other large pets were allowed to bring them to graze on the athletics fields at Ramona High, county officials said.
