SAN DIEGO -- After seven months at sea, the sailors aboard the USS John Young were welcomed home to San Diego Thursday.
A crowd of family and friends greeted the Navy destroyer as it pulled into Naval Station San Diego. The ship's 350 crew members lined the side of the ship dressed in their Navy whites. The John Young left its homeport in October and was the first to be deployed from San Diego after the Sept. 11 attacks. It had been at sea in the Middle East participating search-and-seizure missions as part of Operation Enduring Freedom, 10News reported.
The crew was part of a multinational force patrolling the Arabian Gulf to prevent the escape of al-Qaida terrorists."It feels so great to be back home. I could not wait," one sailor told 10News. "It's like every day is one day longer than the next until you finally get here."It was the final deployment for the John Young, which is scheduled to be decommissioned.
