10News Viewers Help I-Team Expose Man Behind Alleged Scam

UPDATED: 5:57 pm PDT August 27, 2007

The 10News Investigations team recently informed viewers about a rental scam hitting would-be renters all over coastal San Diego.

Victims told 10News they were out thousands of dollars and they have been contacting the I-Team, putting them closer to one of the men behind the alleged scheme.

The I-Team is onto a man's alleged rental scam in which he rents out homes he does not own. According to victims, the man is a smooth talker when he isn't running away from the I-Team.

"He's really cool. He gives you good vibes, which is what made me comfortable. It felt good giving them the money," said alleged victim Justin Bina.

Thanks to 10News and 10News.com viewers, the I-Team is hearing from more people that might be affected by this scam and from those who might know the alleged ringleader of the operation.

Tips and other information led the I-Team to the man's MySpace page.

His name is Anthony Zoccolillo, a Bronx, N.Y. native living in San Diego. According to his MySpace page, he is 30 years old and is a big fan of Tony Soprano.

However, there is no mention of the scam he is suspected of running on people in San Diego.

The 10News I-Team confronted Zoccolillo, but he jumped into his car and fled.

Sources told 10News the driver of the car is claiming he knows nothing about the rental scam or the illegal entry into the home by Zoccolillo. He said Zoccolillo hired him to drive to the house in Pacific Beach.

The 10News I-Team is seeking the driver of the car in its report so he may prove his innocence in the case.

According to I-Team research, Zoccolillo or someone in his group is heading north to attempt to work the scheme.
