VISTA. Calif. -- A North County supermarket was evacuated Friday after a caller threatened to detonate a bomb and carry out a shooting rampage at the store unless money was wired to an Internet account, authorities said. An employee at the Vons store in the 900 block of South Santa Fe Avenue in Vista received the telephone threat about 8:40 a.m., sheriff's Lt. William Donahue said. After the store was evacuated, a bomb squad searched the business, finding nothing dangerous or suspicious, Donahue said.
The supermarket reopened for business in the late morning, a customer service representative said. Investigators were treating the incident as an attempted robbery, according to Donahue, who said the perpetrator was "trying to extort money by fear."
