SAN DIEGO -- Another electric car is set to hit the market, 10News reported.
Global Electric Motorcars, a division of Daimler-Chrysler, is hoping the Gem car will change the look and feel of driving. The Gem looks like something from a Jetsons cartoon and even sounds a bit like it, according to 10News. But the car, which resembles a golf cart, is designed for easy neighborhood trips, according to 10News.In several different models -- from utility, to two-seater, to a four-seat family special -- the concept is one of a neighborhood electric vehicle (NEV).
"Trips to the market, trips to the bank, trips to the doctor; all those little trips which produce the most pollution," said Michael Coates, of Global Electric Motorcars. The comparison to a golf cart is natural, 10News reported, but the Gem is 10 inches wider, and 10-15 mph faster. And unlike a golf cart, it is street legal -- as long as there's a 25 mph limit or less. The Gem can tackle a trek of up to 35 miles on its six 12-volt batteries, which can be fully charged from a household outlet in eight hours, 10News reported.Price depends on the model, but the Gem sells, on average, for about $7,000.The Gem will take a while to start showing up at dealerships, however it will likely start popping up as rental vehicle in resort communities like Palm Springs, 10News reported.
