SAN DIEGO -- Attorneys agreed Wednesday that a parolee accused of stabbing a couple in Hillcrest for no apparent reason six months ago is competent to stand trial on assault charges.Jared Jacobson, 31, has acted out in several court appearances since his Feb. 7 arraignment, ranting that he didn't want to be in the courtroom and that everyone involved in the case should be fired.A hearing was supposed to go forward today to determine if Jacobson was mentally competent to stand trial, but attorneys stipulated that he understood the charges against him and could assist in his own defense.Judge Jeffrey Fraser scheduled a readiness conference for Aug. 24 and a Sept. 6 trial date.Jacobson is accused of stabbing a man and a woman with a steak knife as they left a Hillcrest pharmacy on Feb. 4.Police said the stabbings appeared to be unprovoked, and that after the attack, Jacobson sat on a curb and smoked cigarettes until officers arrived. At the time of the stabbings, Jacobson was on parole for assaulting a police officer. He faces 10 years in state prison if convicted of the current charges, prosecutors said.
