OCEANSIDE, Calif. -- One woman was hospitalized after a large swarm of bees attacked more than dozen people Friday on Mission Avenue in San Luis Valley. The bees, which had established a hive in a street light, were apparently provoked after a car bumped the light pole.
The dozen victims were waiting at a bus stop at Mission Avenue and Carolyn Circle, or pumping gas at a nearby station, and were stung one to ten times each. Some ran into the gas station office and called for help, said Pete Lawrence, battalion chief of the Oceanside Fire Department. A woman a mile east on Mission Avenue was also attacked by the swarm, which stung her about 50 times. She flagged down a motorist who took her to the Oceanside Police Station. She was then taken to Tri-City Medical Center and treated. Her injuries are not life-threatening, officials said. Authorities suspended bus service in the area, and firefighters used foam to smother the hive because of its immediate danger to pedestrians, homes and businesses. The entire episode took about two hours, Lawrence said.
