Poway Molestation

Transient Pleads Not Guilty In Poway Molestation

POSTED: 3:59 pm PDT July 19, 2007
UPDATED: 4:06 pm PDT July 19, 2007

A man accused of molesting a 13-year-old boy after supplying him with alcohol on a secluded Poway hillside pleaded not guilty Thursday to three sexual assault charges.

Jesus Mora Nava, a 30-year-old suspected illegal immigrant, was ordered held on $2 million bail.

Deputy District Attorney Dino Paraskevopoulos told Judge David Szumowski that the boy was standing outside Meadowbrook Middle School in Poway on Monday morning when he was approached by a stranger, who turned out to be Nava.

The defendant asked the boy in Spanish if he had any drugs, and the teen said no, according to the prosecutor.

Nava left, but came back and offered the boy some beer, which he declined, Paraskevopoulos alleged.

The defendant left again and returned with beer, and the boy had some to drink at that point, the prosecutor said.

Paraskevopoulos alleged Nava then took the boy with him to a nearby liquor store, where he bought more beer and hard liquor.

The defendant then took the victim to a transient encampment near the school and gave him watermelon and more beer before sodomizing the child after he passed out, the prosecutor alleged.

When the victim came to and started walking away, the defendant followed, Paraskevopoulos said.

Nava threatened the boy that if he said anything about the sexual assault, he would find the teen's family and kill them, the prosecutor alleged.

The defendant also allegedly demanded that the boy sodomize him, but he refused.

The prosecutor said the victim found a good Samaritan, who took him to a sheriff's substation and ultimately to a hospital.

Using a helicopter, deputies found the defendant about six hours later at his encampment, Paraskevopoulos said.

When a deputy approached at gunpoint, Nava grabbed a rifle and wouldn't let go, then ran and was apprehended a short distance away, the prosecutor alleged.

He said Nava admitted in a subsequent interview that he provided alcohol to the boy and sodomized him at the camp.

Deputy Public Defender Paul Rodriguez told the judge that Nava had family in Mexico and no prior record.

The judge ordered Nava to have no contact with the boy and to stay away from all schools should he make bail.

Nava faces 15 years to life in prison if convicted of one count of aggravated sexual assault on a child and two counts of committing a forcible lewd act on a child, the prosecutor said.

Paraskevopoulos said investigators fear there may be more victims, and asked people who may have had similar contact with the defendant to call the San Diego County Sheriff's Department.

Szumowski set a status conference for July 26 and a preliminary hearing for Aug. 1.
