A 55-year-old laborer working in a trench at a Kearny Mesa construction site was killed Thursday when the steel shovel end of a backhoe fell off the machine and landed on him, authorities said.

Darrell Morgan of Vista died at the scene of the accident in the 5800 block of Copley Drive shortly after 9 a.m., according to the San Diego Fire-Rescue Department and county Medical Examiner's Office.

It was unclear why the backhoe bucket came loose, officials said.

Cal/OSHA investigators went to the site to determine the cause of the fatal accident.
