Man Killed While Working In Trench

SAN DIEGO -- A 55-year-old laborer working in a trench at a Kearny Mesa construction site was killed Thursday when the steel shovel end of a backhoe fell off the machine and landed on him, authorities said.Darrell Morgan of Vista died at the scene of the accident in the 5800 block of Copley Drive shortly after 9 a.m., according to the San Diego Fire-Rescue Department and county Medical Examiner's Office.It was unclear why the backhoe bucket came loose, officials said.
Cal/OSHA investigators went to the site to determine the cause of the fatal accident.
