SAN DIEGO -- More than a ton of marijuana was seized from a big rig at the Otay Mesa border crossing, The Sand Diego Union-Tribune reported.

The 33-year-old Mexican driver was arrested Monday after U.S. Customs and Border Protection officers found 83 packages of pot in a hidden compartment of the otherwise empty trailer, agency spokesman Vince Bond told The San Diego Union-Tribune.

The driver crossed the border from Mexico about 5:30 p.m. and was directed to a gamma-ray inspection area, where officers found a false wall and pulled out 2,066 pounds of marijuana, the Union-Tribune reported.
