Three Killed In High-Speed Crash Identified

ENCINITAS, Calif. -- Authorities released the names Monday of three Linda Vista teenagers killed when the SUV they were in skidded off a North County freeway at high speed and plunged down a 75-foot embankment.Eliazar Paramo-Cardona, 13, Omar Paramo-Cardona, 18, and 19-year-old Ismael Zaragoza-Paramo died at the scene of Sunday’s crash on Interstate 5 in Carlsbad, according to the California Highway Patrol and county Medical Examiner's Office.A fourth occupant of the 1992 Nissan Pathfinder, Antonio Zaragoza, 22, was transported to Scripps Hospital La Jolla in serious condition.
Two of the youths were brothers; the other two cousins, CHP public information Officer Tom Kerns said.According to witnesses, the SUV was southbound at about 100 mph when the driver suddenly veered to avoid a 2003 Lexus GS300 ahead of him near La Costa Avenue shortly after 3 a.m., the California Highway Patrol reported.The Pathfinder sideswiped the sedan, then swerved to the right in front of it, crossed all southbound lanes and careened off the roadway.The sport utility vehicle struck several large trees, ejecting two of the passengers before coming to a stop, Kerns said.The two occupants of the Lexus were uninjured.Investigators found no alcohol or drugs in the Pathfinder. It was not immediately clear which of the teens was driving the SUV.
