Second Serviceman Arrested In Connection With Robbery Series

UPDATED: 3:42 pm PDT June 27, 2007

Authorities Wednesday announced the arrest of a second serviceman in connection with a spree of recent North County commercial holdups.

Navy Corpsman Quintel Antonio Brooks, 19, was booked Monday on four counts of robbery, according to jail officials. He is scheduled to be arraigned in Vista Thursday afternoon.

Brooks is suspected of carrying out a series of heists in Oceanside along with 20-year-old McKenzie Smith, a Marine lance corporal stationed at Camp Pendleton.

Last weekend, Smith was shot and wounded by a clerk while allegedly attempting to rob a liquor store on North Redondo Drive.

Smith allegedly entered the business about 9:30 p.m. Saturday, pulled a pistol and demanded money. A cashier began complying, then grabbed Smith's weapon and tried to wrest it away, Oceanside police Sgt. Leonard Mata said.

During the struggle, another worker retrieved a gun from behind the counter and opened fire on the Marine.

Smith suffered multiple gunshot wounds and was taken to a trauma center, where he was subsequently arrested on suspicion of seven counts of robbery and two counts of attempted robbery, Mata said.

Prosecutors may arraign Smith in his hospital room Thursday, according to court officials.
