OCEANSIDE, Calif. -- Authorities Monday identified a robbery suspect wounded by a clerk during a weekend holdup attempt at a North County liquor store as a 20-year-old Camp Pendleton Marine.

Lance Cpl. Mckenzie Smith suffered multiple gunshot wounds during the thwarted robbery on North Redondo Drive in Oceanside, according to investigators.

Smith allegedly entered the business about 9:30 p.m. Saturday, pulled a pistol and demanded money, police Sgt. Leonard Mata said.

A cashier began complying, then grabbed Smith's weapon and tried to wrest it away, Mata said.

During the struggle, a second clerk retrieved a gun from behind the counter and shot the serviceman, who stumbled out of the shop and collapsed about a block away.

Medics took him to a trauma center for treatment of apparently non-life-threatening wounds, the sergeant said.
