Investigators: Marine ID'd As Liquor Store Robber

OCEANSIDE, Calif. -- Authorities Monday identified a robbery suspect wounded by a clerk during a weekend holdup attempt at a North County liquor store as a 20-year-old Camp Pendleton Marine.Lance Cpl. Mckenzie Smith suffered multiple gunshot wounds during the thwarted robbery on North Redondo Drive in Oceanside, according to investigators.Smith allegedly entered the business about 9:30 p.m. Saturday, pulled a pistol and demanded money, police Sgt. Leonard Mata said.A cashier began complying, then grabbed Smith's weapon and tried to wrest it away, Mata said.During the struggle, a second clerk retrieved a gun from behind the counter and shot the serviceman, who stumbled out of the shop and collapsed about a block away.Medics took him to a trauma center for treatment of apparently non-life-threatening wounds, the sergeant said.
