UPDATED: 4:38 pm PDT June 3, 2007

Fire investigators say the fire that damaged the roof of a mixed-use residential commercial building near the UC San Diego campus Sunday was caused by an electrical short in the rooftop air conditioning unit.

The fire broke out around 12:50 p.m. above The Bombay Company furniture store, 8867 Villa La Jolla Drive.

Five engines were sent. Fire fighters evacuated the upstairs residents and quickly extinguished the blaze, which caused interior smoke damage and extensive roof damage, officials said.

Dave Ribas with the San Diego Fire Department said the losses are estimated at $50,000 in property damages and $4,000 in content damages.

It was the second electrical fire of the day, Ribas said.

Fire fighters were also called to the scene of a house fire at 3539 Ticonderoga St., just east of Pacific Beach.

That fire, which was reported at 10:50 a.m., started in the wall of the second floor of the home. Investigators determined that a water pipe that attracted condensation caused an electrical short, Ribas said.

It caused $30,000 in property losses and $20,000 in content losses.

Eight engines were sent to subdue thay blaze, Ribas said.
