Man Accused Of Beating Surfer Checks Into Rehab Center
POSTED: 10:20 am PDT June 2, 2007
SAN DIEGO -- One of four men charged in the fatal beating of a local surfer has posted a $1 million bail and checked into a rehabilitation center, the Union-Tribune reported Saturday. Matthew Yanke, 20, is one of four acquaintances charged in the May 24 fatal beating of pro surfer Emery Kauanui, 24, apparently a grudge match stemming from an earlier spilled drink at a Pacific Beach bar. The others remained jailed Friday. Bail is set at $2.5 million for Seth Cravens, 21, $2 million for Eric House, 20, and $1.5 million for Orlando Osuna, 20. The defendants, who claim on MySpace profiles to be part of a "crew" of hard-partying surfers called the Bird Rock Bandits, pleaded innocent to murder in Superior Court on Thursday. They face 25 years to life in prison if convicted. Yanke, according to his attorney, had known Kauanui since his sophomore year at La Jolla High School. Popular among La Jolla surfers, Kauanui's loss has devastated the local community. Surfers have scheduled a "paddle out" at Windansea Surf Club on June 9. Police said Kauanui was beaten by the four men and left for dead outside his mother's home four days following a bar fight at the La Jolla Brew House, a bar on Fay Street in Pacific Beach.
