SAN DIEGO -- Balboa Elementary was named Wednesday as one of Intel Corp.'s Schools of Distinction for its math program. In the last five years, Balboa students' score on the math portion of the California Standards Test has risen from 51 in 2002 to 175 this year, Intel officials said. Balboa is located near the San Diego and National City boundary in an economically challenged area. About 91 percent of the school's 790 students are Hispanic.
Intel presents the Schools of Distinction awards every year in various categories.
