The neighborhood memorial honoring 7-year-old kidnap and murder victim Danielle van Dam has been taken down because it violates rules set up by the local homeowner's association, 10News reported.

The memorial had been located in a park near the van Dams' Mountain Pass Road home, and was removed Tuesday morning. It had been attracting new visitors on a daily basis.

Memorial visitors who 10News spoke to Monday said that they didn't want it taken down because they were still trying to find closure.

Betsy Wingrove had been a self-appointed caretaker of the spontaneous memorial. She told 10News that she didn't think the memorial should be taken down, regardless of what the homeowner's association might say.

She told 10News that she was upset about plans to remove the memorial.

"I'm really concerned, because people still come here to show their respect," Wingrove said.

The van Dam family approved of the memorial's removal, 10News reported. All of the stuffed animals that had been placed at the site were donated to the Polinsky Children's Center.
