SAN DIEGO -- The memorial honoring 7-year-old kidnap and murder victim Danielle van Dam may soon be taken down because it violates rules set up by the local homeowner's association, 10News reported.
The television live trucks, and news cars are gone, but at the end of Mountain Pass Road, flowers still cover the neighborhood park, attracting new visitors on a daily basis.
Visitors to the memorial say they don't want it taken down because they are still trying to find closure.Jennifer Dauenhauer drove to the memorial from San Bernardino."I just came up here to visit on vacation, and I wanted to come and pay tribute to the family," she said.Jim Stern told 10News that he had been meaning to stop by for a while, but it was only on Monday -- almost a month and a half after Danielle was first discovered missing -- that he brought a stuffed toy during his work break."It takes awhile (for the pain) to filter through ... the public's not through with this," Stern said.Betsy Wingrove is a self-appointed caretaker of the spontaneous memorial. She told 10News that she doesn't think the memorial should be taken down, regardless of what the homeowner's association might say.She told 10News that she is upset about plans to remove the memorial."I'm really concerned, because people still come here to show their respect," Wingrove said.
Wingrove said that the individual from the homeowner's association with whom she spoke had expressed concern that children in the neighborhood weren't able to play in the park when it was serving as a memorial. But Wingrove said it is simply too soon to remove the memorial."If it's gone, it's gonna be weird," Wingrove said.10News spoke to various people within the association, as well as the van Dam family's representative, and no one can offer a concrete day on when the memorial will be taken down, and there seems to be confusion as to who is responsible for it.If you plan to visit the Sabre Springs memorial keep in mind that anything you bring may be thrown away or given away soon, 10News reported.
