ESCONDIDO, Calif. -- A 19-year-old San Marcos man is in custody Sunday in connection with a crash that killed a 51-year-old motorcyclist, a police officer said. Ericel Garcia was being held in the Vista Detention Facility on suspicion of vehicular manslaughter, felony hit-and-run and operating a vehicle without a license, said Escondido police Officer Scott Christensen.
Garcia's bail was set at $1 million, according to the jail. Thomas Icenogle of Escondido was pronounced dead at the scene Saturday evening, Christensen said. Alcohol did not play a role in the wreck, the officer said. Paramedics sent to Mission Avenue and Metcalf Street at 8:19 p.m. and found Icenogle and his motorcycle in the road. Witnesses told police that a white GMC Yukon hit Icenogle, then fled north on Metcalf. Nine minutes later, officers spotted the Yukon in the 1000 block of Rock Springs Road, stopped the car and arrested Garcia, who was driving, Christensen said.He said a preliminary investigation indicated Icenogle was westbound on Mission Avenue, while Garcia was heading east on the same street and turned left into the path of the motorcycle. Anyone with more information about the collision was asked to call Escondido Police Department at 760-839-4722.
