SAN DIEGO -- A driver in a van led authorities on a 100 mph chase from the East County to San Ysidro Thursday before bailing out and fleeing into Mexico along with a passenger, where the men seemed to dance in celebration, according to 10News.
The California Highway Patrol began getting reports shortly after 12:30 p.m. about a dark-colored Chevrolet Astro with Baja license plates traveling on the wrong side of the road on Interstate 8, near Pine Valley, a dispatcher said.
The driver then got onto the correct side of westbound I-8, only to get off the freeway and re-enter going the wrong way once more a short time later. The van proceeded in the correct direction through Harbison Canyon and the Lake Jennings area at about 100 mph, passing traffic on both shoulders, the CHP reported. With a sheriff's helicopter crew tracking the Astro's movements from a high altitude, the motorist slowed to about 75 mph while passing into and through El Cajon. The driver then took State Route 125 through La Mesa and got onto westbound SR-94, speeding up to 90 mph and faster while continuing on into eastern San Diego. At 1:30 p.m., the motorist exited at 28th Street in the Grant Hill area, then headed south to Market Street and west to 25th Street, where the van again began heading south, according to the Highway Patrol. The driver then got onto Interstate 5 and once more began using the shoulders to pass other vehicles at high speed.
Around E Street, San Diego police officers who had begun pursuing the reckless driver backed off as the van continued toward the U.S.-Mexico border. At about 1:45, the motorist got off at Camino de la Plaza, the southernmost U.S. exit from I-5, drove south and then pulled over. The driver and a passenger got out and fled through the pedestrian entry gate into Mexico.Upon entering Mexico, the driver danced in circles and waved a sweater in the air (pictured, right) in celebration. The San Diego Police Department contacted border authorities to get help in searching for the fugitives, who remain at large.
