GARDENA, Calif. -- Three home-invasion robbers broke into a Los Angeles Police officer's home in Gardena and fled in his silver Toyota Avalon with two of the officer's guns, police said Wednesday. The officer, whose name was withheld, answered a knock on his door at about 11 a.m. Tuesday and one of the three robbers pepper-sprayed him, said Gardena police Sgt. Mike Bartlebaugh. The trio then ransacked the house, took a television and a pistol and fled in the Toyota, which bears California license plate number 5TYZ290.Bartebaugh said it was the first time he had ever heard of a home-invasion robbery committed against a police officer."It was totally random as far as we know," Bartebaugh said. After being pepper-sprayed, the officer was forced by one of the intruders into a corner at gunpoint, the sergeant said. The officer, who was not seriously hurt, is assigned to the Pacific Station. Los Angeles police acknowledged the crime, but declined to discuss it, saying Gardena police were handling the investigation. The guns believed to have been taken are a 9 mm semiautomatic pistol and .38-caliber Smith & Wesson revolver. One apparently was in the car at the time and the other was taken from the house, Bartlebaugh said.A detailed description of the robbers was unavailable. No other vehicle associated with the robbbers was seen, the sergeant said.
