Couple Accused Of Fatally Overmedicating Baby

POSTED: 7:35 pm PDT March 15, 2007
UPDATED: 8:01 am PDT March 16, 2007

A Pacific Northwest couple were in custody Thursday and facing felony child abuse charges for allegedly fatally overmedicating their sick baby during a visit to San Diego last fall, officials said.

Lorrie and Thomas Boettger of Shelton, Wash., were arrested in Seattle on Monday and booked in connection with the death of their 6-month-old son, Thomas Jr., according to police.

The child died Oct. 25 in the 4400 block of 44th Street in the Talmadge neighborhood, where the family was staying with relatives, San Diego Police Department Lt. Lawrence McKinney said.

"The medical examiner ruled the death a homicide when toxicology results and family history revealed the parents administered adult over-the-counter medications, which contributed to his death," McKinney said.

McKinney declined to specify the type of inappropriate medicines that Lorrie Boettger, 37, and her 38-year-old husband allegedly gave their son. He also would not say what type of illness the baby had.

The suspects were being held on $1 million bail pending their extradition back to San Diego.
