LA JOLLA, Calif. -- The first of what organizers plan to make an annual statistics competition for high school students took place Saturday morning at University of California- San Diego. About 50 math whizzes from at least 10 area high schools participated, which would work out to five per school, 10News reported. The top prize of $500 was presented by Hirotugu Akaike, a Japanese mathematician and 2006 Kyoto Laureate in basic sciences, to the students with the top two scores. That's, of course, a 1 in 25 chance if there are indeed 50 competitors. Graphing calculators will go to the top five finishers (1 in 10 chance) and top three coaches.
