Michael Ray Jennison Pleads Not Guilty To Murder Charge

EL CAJON, Calif. -- A Lakeside man accused in the shooting death of a real estate agent who visited his home on business pleaded not guilty Tuesday to a murder charge.Michael Ray Jennison, 36, was ordered held on $1 million bail.The defendant was arrested Feb. 3 in Phoenix, Ariz., two days after he allegedly shot 64-year-old James Magot to death at the Winter Gardens Boulevard condominium complex where Jennison lived.According to investigators and the victim's family, Jennison's condominium was in probate, and Magot was inexplicably shot after coming by with an offer to sell the property.Detectives have not determined a motive, such as a prior dispute or threat, for the slaying, sheriff's Lt. Dennis Brugos said.Shortly after 4 p.m. on Feb. 1, deputies responding to reports of gunfire at Jennison's residence found Magot mortally wounded inside.At the time of his arrest less than 48 hours later, Jennison, who was driving alone, had three handguns in his vehicle, authorities reported.Magot, a Pacific Beach resident who ran a real estate business along with his wife, was a Vietnam veteran, a Purple Heart recipient and an elder for his La Jolla church.A status conference was scheduled for March 29 and a preliminary hearing set for April 5 at the El Cajon Courthouse.
