10News reporter Joe Little helps reunite dog with owner

Sam Nguyen's home was evacuated in Cocos Fire

SAN MARCOS, Calif. - An English bull terrier was reunited with his owner Friday after being trapped at home during one of San Diego's fire evacuations.

Sam Nguyen was at work when the Cocos Fire in San Marcos forced an evacuation of her San Elijo Hills home Wednesday. Her four-year-old dog, Oakley, was left alone in the garage. He had access to the back yard through a doggie door.

"We've been so worried about him," said Nguyen, who also told 10News Oakley was her only child.

Nguyen tried to get permission to retrieve Oakley, but she was told it was too unsafe and there was no one available to escort her.

Nguyen called 10News, as the media has access to disaster areas that the public does not.

"He's got to be starving and thirsty," Nguyen told 10News reporter Joe Little, who decided to retrieve Oakley for her.

Little drove his 10News Prius into the Cocos Fire evacuation area, befriended Oakley with some turkey, put him on a leash and then put him in the car.

Little and Oakley drove to Nguyen's workplace in Mira Mesa, where the two were reunited.
