Man 'Fires Judge' In Courtroom Outburst

UPDATED: 12:15 pm PST February 9, 2007

A parolee accused of stabbing a couple in Hillcrest for no apparent reason had his case suspended by a judge Friday after he shouted in court and refused to communicate with his court-appointed attorney.

Jared Jacobson, 30, is charged with felony assault for allegedly stabbing a man and a woman with a steak knife as they left a Hillcrest pharmacy last Sunday.

Both victims are recovering, said Deputy District Attorney Ana De Santiago.

Police said the attack appeared to be unprovoked, and that after the stabbings, Jacobson sat on a nearby curb and smoked cigarettes until officers arrived.

As he did at his arraignment Wednesday, Jacobson began ranting as Judge David Szumowski took the bench.

Referring to himself in the third person, the defendant said, "Judge, Jacobson says the district attorney is fired and you are fired. You can talk to the public defender about that, because I fired him yesterday. You are all, as of this moment, fired. Please don't bring me back to this courtroom. Thank you."

Szumowski asked Jacobson if he was going to be quiet.

"No," the defendant said, and the judge had him removed from the courtroom.

The judge granted a request by Deputy Public Defender Troy Britt to have Jacobson evaluated by doctors to see if he is mentally competent to understand the charges against him and assist his lawyers at trial.

Jacobson will be held without bail until March 2, when a different judge will rule on the competency issue.

Szumowski said Jacobson is probably "blowing smoke at all of us" and "malingering," but ordered the psychological examination anyway.

On Wednesday, Jacobson told the judge he wanted to plead "psychosomatic addict" and was escorted from the courtroom.

Jacobson is on parole for a 2004 or 2005 conviction for assaulting a police officer and faces 10 years in state prison if convicted on the latest charges, prosecutors said.
