Man Accused In Lakeside Slaying Arrives In San Diego

POSTED: 6:11 pm PST February 6, 2007
UPDATED: 6:45 pm PST February 6, 2007

A Lakeside man arrested in Arizona over the weekend for allegedly gunning down a real estate agent who visited his home on business was returned to Southern California Tuesday to stand trial for the slaying.

Homicide detectives escorted Michael Ray Jennison, 36, into San Diego County sheriff's headquarters in Kearny Mesa in the late afternoon, ushering him through a throng of news crews.

Jennison was arrested during a traffic stop east of Phoenix on Saturday, two days after he allegedly shot 64-year-old James Magot as the victim was making a house call on business.

According to investigators and the victim's family, Jennison's Winter Gardens Boulevard condominium was in probate, and Magot was inexplicably shot after coming by with an offer to sell the property.

While being taken in for questioning, the suspect declined to directly answer reporters' questions about his alleged involvement in Magot's death.

"I haven't been informed on the case," he said as he entered the station.

Detectives have determined no motive, such as a prior dispute or threat, for the slaying, sheriff's Lt. Dennis Brugos said.

"I'm sure that if the victim had thought that he'd be in danger of some sort because of a previous altercation or words or whatever ... perhaps he would have said something to somebody or taken that into consideration when he went over to see him," the lieutenant told news crews.

Shortly after 4 p.m. last Thursday, deputies responding to reports of gunfire at Jennison's residence found Magot mortally wounded inside.

At the time of his arrest less than 48 hours later, Jennison, who was driving alone, had three handguns in his vehicle, authorities reported.

Magot, a Pacific Beach resident who ran a real estate business along with his wife, was a Vietnam veteran, a Purple Heart recipient and an elder for his La Jolla church.
