Illegal Street Race Leaves Two Dead

Victims Identified As UCSD Students

Two young people who died in a 1997 BMW that crashed during a race in Mira Mesa were identified Saturday as University of California, San Diego, students, reported 10News.

The 22-year-old driver was Leonard Cheng, of Oakland, Calif.; and his 20-year-old passenger was Lauren Louis, of Pinole, Calif., according to the Medical Examiner's Office.

Autopsies are pending.

The BMW and another vehicle, described as a black Lexus, were racing westbound on Mira Mesa Boulevard when the BMW driver lost control near Parkdale Avenue and crashed into some trees shortly after 11 p.m. Friday, said San Diego police Sgt. Alan Hayward.

The driver of the other car is being sought.
