Senior Defense Official Says No Evidence In Haditha Case

POSTED: 3:16 pm PST January 6, 2007
UPDATED: 1:36 pm PST January 7, 2007

Camp Pendleton Marines who are charged with killing unarmed Iraqis claim the five were shot while fleeing the scene of a roadside bombing.

But a senior defense official said investigators haven't found a shred of evidence to support the story.

The man spoke to The Associated Press Saturday on condition of anonymity.

He said criminal investigators discovered all five Iraqis were shot within arm's length of each other and close to a taxi the Marines had told them to exit.

Two Marines are charged with murder in connection with the 2005 killings in the Iraqi town of Haditha (hah-DEE'-thuh).

Two other Marines are charged with other civilian deaths in the same town.

In all, the case involves 24 civilian deaths.
