Man Accused In Jamul Fatal Shooting Pleads Not Guilty

UPDATED: 5:33 pm PST December 18, 2006

A man suspected of killing a 23-year-old Jamul resident along a back-country road in East County earlier this month pleaded not guilty Monday to murder, attempted murder and firearms charges.

Joseph "Bob" Orlosky, 55, was ordered held on $2 million bail.

Orlosky turned himself in to authorities Friday in connection with a Dec. 1 shooting that left construction worker Charles Crow dead.

Orlosky was charged with one count of murder, two counts of premeditated attempted murder and one count of shooting into an occupied vehicle, Deputy District Attorney Kristian Trocha said.

Orlosky faces more than 50 years to life in prison if convicted, the prosecutor said.

Orlosky allegedly opened fire with an assault rifle on a vehicle carrying three young men on Wisecarver Truck Trail, east of Jamul, about 8:30 p.m. Dec. 1, killing Crow and leaving another man with minor injuries, authorities said.

Orlosky, wearing a green camouflage jacket, got out of a pickup truck with a rifle in his hands, walked to the middle of the road, and fired several rounds at the victims before leaving, said sheriff's Lt. Dennis Brugos.

Crow, the father of a 5-month-old boy, died a half-hour after the shooting, authorities said.

The motive for the killing was not known.

Judge William McGrath scheduled a bail review for Thursday and a readiness conference for Dec. 28.

A preliminary hearing was scheduled for Jan. 2.
