SAN DIEGO -- A man accused of using his job as a security guard to lure young girls into his car, where he allegedly forced them into sex acts, was charged Wednesday with 12 felony counts, including rape and kidnapping.Robert James Purdy, 41, had his formal arraignment postponed until Monday to give him time to hire a private attorney.Superior Court Judge Laura H. Parsky set Purdy's bail at $500,000.
Deputy District Attorney Evan Kirvin said Purdy is charged with raping two girls under the age of 16 on Nov. 7 and Nov. 8, but more charges could be forthcoming."At this point, we do believe that there are additional victims," the prosecutor said outside court.Kirvin said people who think Purdy might have victimized them should call San Diego police.Kirvin said the defendant, a Wackenhut Corp. employee, faces "extremely serious" charges of using his badge to commit sexual offenses against the two young girls. The alleged victims were "in areas known for prostitution when they were victimized," said San Diego police information officer Monica Munoz.Kirvin would not comment on whether the alleged victims were prostitutes. He said at least one victim was moved from one location to another. The prosecutor said Purdy was licensed as a security guard and licensed to carry a firearm."He abused that authority by victimizing two young women," Kirvin alleged. The defendant was tracked down and arrested last week after an officer recalled putting a citation on a vehicle that fit the description given by one of the alleged sexual assault victims.Purdy is charged with two counts each of rape under the color of authority, unlawful sexual intercourse with a minor under 16, oral copulation under the color of authority and oral copulation by a person over 21 on a person under 16.He also faces one count each of sodomy under the color of authority, sodomy on a person under 16, kidnapping and false imprisonment by violence, fraud or deceit.Purdy faces more than 17 years in prison if convicted.
