A 14-year-old girl killed in a rollover crash near Borrego Springs may have been leaning out the window of the sport utility vehicle with another teen before the 19-year-old driver lost control, the California Highway Patrol reported Friday.

The crash was reported about 7:15 Thursday night on Old Springs Road, east of Peg Leg Road, according to CHP Brian Pennings.

Liliana Rojas was driving a 1999 Ford Explorer about 50 miles an hour with three 14-year-old female passengers when she lost control of the SUV, which rolled over several times, he said.

Rojas told authorities that she and her front seat passenger were wearing seat belts, while the two girls in the back were unrestrained and hanging out the windows of the SUV, Pennings said.

Both back seat passengers were ejected in the crash, he said.

The fatally injured victim was identified by the Medical Examiner's office as Chelsea Welborne of Borrego Springs.

The other girl who was in the back seat suffered a broken arm and lacerations, while Rojas had injuries to her head and elbow and the front seat passenger also suffered head injuries and a crushed left hand, the officer said.

The ejected passenger who broke her arm ran about 200 yards and flagged down two men in a pickup truck, who drove all of the victims to Borrego Springs High School, where emergency workers were on duty for a football game, Pennings said.

Chelsea was pronounced dead at the school, and Rojas and the other two survivors were airlifted to a local hospital, Pennings said.
