Letters are being sent to parents of students from 13 San Diego area schools that may have come into contact with bats while sleeping in a Cuyamaca Outdoor School cabin, health officials said Thursday.

According to the San Diego County Health and Human Services Agency, at least one bat was seen in the cabin where about 450 students had slept since Sept. 11, raising concerns about exposure to rabies.

"Any students who touched or were bitten by a bat, or woke and found a bat near them, or their sleeping bag, should call their physician," said Dr. Wilma Wooten, the county's deputy public health officer.

So far, no students have reported contact with a bat while at the cabin, according to the HHSA. No rabid bats have been found either.

The 13 schools that sent students to the camp since September are sending letters to parents whose children slept in the cabin where the bat was seen to determine if anyone had contact with the animals.

The cabins at the Cuyamaca Outdoor School are also being inspected by the county Department of Environmental Health and letters are being sent to similar facilities to ask them to be on the lookout for bats.

Schools that had students in the cabin in question since Sept. 11:

  • El Camino Creek
  • Flora Vista
  • Mission Estancia
  • Oak Grove Middle
  • Oak Valley Middle
