SAN DIEGO -- Border security is under fire from two of county supervisors, 10News reported.
New visa cards, which are harder to fake, have been issued to foreigners coming into the United States. However, the technology to read the cards has not been installed at the border crossings.
Dianne Jacob and Greg Cox are urging the federal government to create new social security cards that are difficult to forge.Border crossings in Arizona and California have been at the highest state of alert since the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks. But inspectors haven't implemented a plan in place in New Mexico and Texas to require IDs from all U.S. citizens so inspectors can conduct electronic background checks.INS spokeswoman Virginia Kice said the plan has been delayed as the agency tries to iron out details such as whether to require identification for young children.Currently, U.S. citizens have not been required to show ID or undergo an electronic check for warrants as they walk across the border. But inspectors could require it at their discretion. The policy change is expected to add further delays for the more than 30,000 people who walk across the border from Tijuana to San Diego each day.
