Report: Cunningham Used Influence In Defense Funding

Contracts Were Worth $70 To $80 Million

Imprisoned former Rep. Randy "Duke" Cunningham used his influence on the House Intelligence Committee to secure $70 million to $80 million in funding for two defense contractors who bribed him, according to a report released by the committee's top Democrat Tuesday.

The contractors, Brent Wilkes and Mitch Wade, paid Cunningham $2.4 million in return for the funding, according to the five-page report released by Rep. Jane Harman, D-Venice.

Cunningham, a San Diego Republican, pleaded guilty last November to receiving the bribes. He was sentenced in March to eight years and four months in federal prison.

The report released Tuesday summarizes the results of a probe launched by an Intelligence Committee investigator to determine whether Cunningham improperly used the committee's staff or resources to facilitate the bribery scheme.

"In light of this report, our committee must examine why `red flags' did not trigger greater scrutiny of Cunningham's activities, and what can be done to prevent this type of abuse in the future," Harman said.
