VISTA, Calif. - One person sustained serious injuries in a head-on car collision on Melrose Drive in Vista, deputies said Saturday.

Traffic deputies were dispatched to a "serious" collision between a Ford Explorer and a Chevrolet Cobalt at the intersection of South Melrose at Branding Iron Circle about 9:25 p.m., Sheriff's Deputy Kenneth Werner said Saturday.

"The Explorer appeared to be making a left turn at the intersection when it collided head-on with the Cobalt," Werner said.

A passenger in the Cobalt sustained serious, non-life threatening injuries. Werner said other vehicle occupants were taken to Palomar Medical Center for evaluation and treatment of their injuries.

Alcohol was not believed to have been a factor in the accident, Werner said.

An investigation was continuing. The crash occurred just south of Route 78.
