According to the California Highway Patrol, the initial crash occurred on I-805, just south of Imperial Avenue at about 2:27 a.m. The CHP said a Toyota Matrix heading northbound on I-805 was involved in a crash with a Honda. The Matrix rolled over and came to rest blocking the lanes of traffic.
The driver of a Toyota pickup truck saw the crash and tried to swerve but was unable to avoid hitting the Matrix and its three occupants, who were trying to get to the side of the road.
A 47-year-old woman from Las Vegas who was a passenger in the Matrix was killed. The driver of the Matrix suffered major injuries and was taken to Scripps Mercy Hospital. A child who was a passenger in the Matrix suffered minor injuries and was not transported to a hospital.
Both occupants of the Toyota pickup truck were taken to UCSD Medical Center. The driver sustained moderate injuries and the passenger suffered major injuries, according to the report.
A third collision occurred when a motorcycle crashed into the wreckage. The motorcycle rider was taken to a hospital to be treated. The rider's injuries and condition were unknown.
Authorities are searching for the two occupants of the Honda, who ran away from the scene. A CHP sergeant said they could face charges of felony hit-and-run.
"At this time, we believe they were part of the initial cause," he said.
No descriptions of the occupants were immediately available.
There is no word if speed or alcohol was a factor.
All northbound lanes were reopened by about 8:30 a.m.
Anyone with any information about the crash is asked to call the CHP at (858) 637-3800.
