FALLBROOK, Calif. - A Lamborghini speeding above 100 miles per hour smashed into the median and exploded in flames on Interstate 15 in North County, CHP officers said Sunday.
The driver was a 35-year-old San Marcos man, and CHP officers said he had possibly been drinking alcohol before the 11:20 p.m. crash on Saturday.
Among other major injuries, his face was burned and he was evacuated in a helicopter to the UC San Diego Medical Center, CHP officers said.
The 2008 Lamborghini's driver was headed north on Interstate 15 north of Mission Road near Fallbrook at more than 100 miles per hour when the car drifted from the right lane into the center median, according to CHP Officer Jim Bettencourt.
The crash cut the car in half and it caught fire. The driver sustained injuries including burns to his face, Bettencourt said.
Both the northbound and southbound lanes of Interstate 15 were shut down for about 20 minutes following the crash, Bettencourt said.
The driver's name was not released.
