CHULA VISTA, Calif. - A bicyclist who was killed in a crash in Chula Vista has been identified by police.
The crash occurred at about 4:12 p.m. Monday on East J Street near Dennis Avenue. Chula Vista police say a silver Nissan Maxima was heading westbound on East J Street when it crossed over into oncoming traffic and struck a bicyclist heading eastbound. The car continued onto the sidewalk and then hit an SDG&E electrical pole and a tree.
The 44-year-old bicyclist, identified by police as Chula Vista resident David Voigt, was taken to UCSD Medical Center, where he died from his injuries.
A neighbor who knows Voigt tells 10News he had been riding his bike lately to his job at the Sweetwater Authority. He was riding home from work and was just eight blocks from his home when the crash occurred.
Avid cyclist Joseph Thomas Kelly rides his bike along East J Street daily. He says cars always drive too fast on this stretch of road.
"I think people should slow down, respect bikers," he said.
Neighbor Rebecca Bair agrees.
"To be honest, I am not surprised," said Bair. "There are so many vehicles that come speeding down here … especially coming down J Street."
She and other neighbors believe there needs to be speed bumps in the neighborhood to prevent a tragedy like this one from happening again.
Police say the car was stolen Monday morning from National City. They say evidence found inside the car appears to be property from vehicle burglaries.
The driver, who police identified as 29-year-old Michael Reyes, was also taken to UCSD Medical Center with minor injuries.
Police say Reyes admitted to have been drinking prior to the collision and was arrested. He will be booked into jail on several charges including vehicular manslaughter and possession of stolen vehicle and stolen property.
