Officers conducting a welfare check at a North Park apartment Monday found a dead man and a woman believed to be his wife badly wounded inside.San Diego Police Department homicide Lt. Kevin Rooney said police were asked to do a welfare check on an employee at the Balboa Naval Medical Center. SDPD Det. Gary Hassen said they were checking on the whereabouts of Frederick Trayers, who had missed two consecutive shifts at Balboa, where he is a Navy surgeon.San Diego police went to the residence in the 3700 block of Grim Avenue about 6:15 a.m. to try to contact Trayers.Finding the apartment locked and getting no response from anyone inside, officers forced entry by breaking a window. In one of the rooms, officers found the dead man lying near the bloodied woman.Medics took the surviving victim to a trauma center, where she underwent surgery. She is listed in critical condition. The first officers to arrive at the apartment said the man appeared to have been shot and the woman seemingly had been stabbed repeatedly, Hassen said Monday. On Tuesday, San Diego police told 10News that the man was not shot but apparently stabbed to death.Police have not ruled out murder-suicide or self-defense. However, they have ruled out anyone else being involved, as Rooney said the apartment was locked up tight and there was no sign of forced entry.Authorities told 10News that the woman is currently considered a suspect in the incident.Police also roped off two vehicles with crime scene tape -- a silver Land Rover and white Volkswagen that are both registered to Fred Trayers and his wife, Jennifer.
