Anthony Pernelle Burgess, 30, was sentenced Monday by Judge Michael Anello in U.S. District Court in San Diego, according to the U.S. Attorney's Office.

Anello also ordered Burgess, dubbed the "Well-Dressed Bandit" by investigators during the robbery series, to pay $48,024 in restitution to the banks he victimized.

The crime spree began in July 2010 and continued until last September, according to prosecutors. During most of the heists, Burgess, a San Diego resident, confronted tellers with his right hand held stiffly inside his jacket, as if he were clutching a pistol, court records state.

Burgess was identified during the ninth robbery, when an off-duty police officer watched him flee to a nearby parking garage and get into a black Mercedes-Benz.

The witness was able to write down the license plate for that vehicle, which was registered to Burgess, and provided it to investigators. Fingerprints found at the scene of two of the robberies matched those of Burgess, and surveillance photographs linked him to the other robberies, prosecutors said.

Three months ago, Burgess pleaded guilty to the following crimes: -- July 15, 2010, robbed $4,055 from Wells Fargo Bank, 3445 Del Mar Heights Road; -- Sept. 7, 2010, robbed $4,000 from Chase Bank, 9450 Scranton Road; -- Nov. 5, 2010, robbed $4,000 from Chase Bank, 9450 Scranton Road; -- Jan. 20, 2011, robbed $2,122 from Bank of America, 9460 Scranton Road; -- Feb. 11, 2011, robbed $8,812 from Point Loma Credit Union, 10413 Craftsman Way; -- April 6, 2011, robbed $7,338 from Mission Federal Credit Union, 953 Lomas Santa Fe Drive; -- June 17, 2011, robbed $5,506 from Point Loma Credit Union, 10413 Craftsman Way; -- Aug. 2, 2011, robbed $4,191 from Mission Federal Credit Union, 953 Lomas Santa Fe Drive; -- Sept. 23, 2011, robbed $8,000 from Chase Bank, 9450 Scranton Road.
