Prison Gang Members Arrested In Operation

POSTED: 1:52 pm PST February 13, 2009
UPDATED: 2:41 pm PDT March 10, 2009

Law enforcement took a bite out of crime Friday, rounding up members of the notorious Mexican Mafia. 10News was the only media outlet on the scene.

The sun was coming up as the gang task force was moving out.

The targets were suspected drugs dealers' homes across San Diego.

There were multiple locations in the early morning hours, including a home in Skyline Hills, where the 10News I-Team cameras were rolling.

A female resident who wants to remain anonymous told the I-Team she noticed unusual activities, "all the time."

On Friday morning she saw the bust as it happened.

"I came running outside to see what was going on and the FBI was all over the place," she said.

Skyline Hills is a working-class neighborhood, except for one home neighbors call the "black sheep" of the street. But law enforcement put an end to that.

"I heard a loud bang and it sounded like a shot gun," said Julio Rodriquez who has lived in the neighborhood for years. He was suspicious of what looked to be drug activity in and around the house.

"You've got a lot of traffic going by," he said. "Especially at night you have a lot of people coming out."

A multi-agency SWAT team arrested three people in the home.

"They've always been a problem," says Rodriquez. "And I know the cops have always been after them. They've never been able to do anything. I guess they've finally been able to take care of the problem."

Thirteen Mexican Mafia members were arrested in the operation.

Four members escaped the dragnet and remained at large.

Joining the San Diego Police Department and the FBI were investigators from the district attorney's office and National City police.
