Several stores unveil stricter Christmas return policies

The eggnog has been enjoyed and the presents have been unwrapped, but there’s more work ahead for people who didn’t quite get what they wanted this Christmas.

Many stores are unveiling new rules on what you can and can’t return this year, according to a new survey by

Retailers say they are dealing with more fraud than ever before as criminals get more sophisticated, prompting stores to get more strict.

At Best Buy, the deadline for most electronics returns is now Jan. 15, a week earlier than last year. Best Buy will also require a valid photo ID in addition to a receipt.

Sears has also shortened its return policies for appliances for 60 to 30 days.

Toys R Us is reducing its return period for many electronics to from 45 to 30 days.

Some stores have much more lenient return policies, among them Macy's, Kohls, and Nordstrom. They have no deadlines on most holiday returns.

Bottom line -- be prepared for more questions and shorter return times this year, so you don’t waste your money.
