Remember when there was a Blockbuster Video store on every corner?  In Cincinnati's Hyde Park neighborhood, there used to be two within a half mile.  Now both are gone.

In recent years, hundreds of Blockbusters have closed.

Now, the company is planning 300 more closing, including some of the remaining Cincinnati stores.

Redbox, Netflix Hurt Business

A Blockbuster visit used to be part of everyone's weekend routine, until Redbox, Netflix, and internet streaming came along.

The company, now owned by Dish Network, says it will close 300 stores this year, leaving just 500 in business.

3,000 employees will lose their jobs nationwide.

WCPO.com  has learned that 5 of those stores are in the Cincinnati area, according to store managers.

They are the stores on :

     -Colerain Avenue in Colerain Township
    - Loveland Madeira Road in Loveland
     -Harrison Avenue
     -Eades Parkway  in Lawrenceburg, Indiana.
    - And Hamilton-Richmond Road in Hamilton.

Shifting consumer tastes in the way we rent movies has made the video store almost obsolete.

Most remaining stores are the same type that started the trend in the early 1980s:  Smaller family owned video stores, with a few movies and low overhead, in areas where many people have a long drive to a Redbox location.

As always, don't waste your money.
