Customers say San Diego tax preparation business resulted in audits

Woman tells Team 10 she owes $20K

SAN DIEGO - Some customers are coming forward with claims that they owe the IRS thousands of dollars after they hired a tax preparation business in San Diego.

Team 10 has learned McDaniel Tax and Administrative Services has an "F" rating with the Better Business Bureau of San Diego, Orange and Imperial Counties. The company also lost their BBB accreditation.

Maja Vukmanic is packing up her home and her esthetician business and blames the tax preparation service.

"Now that I found myself in $20,000 in debt with the IRS, I have to get rid of my business and downgrade and figure out my living situation," said Vukmanic.

She said was referred to McDaniel Tax and Administrative Services by a friend who said the tax preparer knew what he was doing.

"I mean, I went to a person I trusted and paid to do the legal and right way," said Vukmanic.

She said owner Toby McDaniel did her taxes in 2010 and 2011, and she did not know of any audit issues until she received an audit letter.

Ten customers all filed similar complaints in the last year with the BBB.

"Unfortunately, we are seeing deductions taken that they weren't entitled to, so full taxes add up, and over time that adds up to a significant amount that consumers owe. In addition, the IRS is assessing penalties," said BBB President and CEO Sheryl Reichert.

Vukmanic said she just can't afford to pay thousands of dollars all at once.

"At least other people should know because his office is still open," said Vukmanic.

Team 10 went to the business on Adams Avenue, but a woman at the front desk said McDaniel wasn't there.

The sticker about the door says people love the business on Yelp, but Team 10 found dozens of reviews with the same complaints that Vukmanic had.

Vukmanic has reached out to several other reviewers on Yelp.

"I want this person to pay for what he did," said Vukmanic.

Team 10 called and emailed the business but has not heard back.
