SAN DIEGO -- If you are a San Diego County homeowner, you may be due a significant refund, 10News reported. The county treasurer tax collector's office discovered millions of dollars in unclaimed property tax monies.According to county tresurer-tax collector Dan McAllister, 11,000 San Diego homeowners overpaid their property taxes from 1996 through 2002 and should be getting a refund.
McAllister discovered the $2.4 million in a trust fund and asked for an independent audit. The audit revealed that homeowners were contacted about the refund, but there was never a follow-up. The overpayment in property taxes came mostly from those refinancing their homes.A refund can total anywhere from $148 to more than $13,000.To find out if you are owed any money you can go to the county's Web site and click on "unclaimed tax payments."
