Town Down To 1 Police Officer

Voter-Approved Budget Cuts Prompts Reductions To Police Force

Some homeowners in Webster, N.H., are worried about the town's possible future without police protection, Manchester television station WMUR reported.

The Webster Police Department has only one police officer left -- down from five officers. Three officers served full time and two worked part time to protect the town of fewer than 1,800 people.

Residents attended a town selectmen's meeting Monday night seeking answers, but said public officials walked out without informing them what would happen.

In March, voters cut the budget by $110,000, prompting reductions to the Police Department. A group calling itself the Concerned Citizens of Webster said residents were told the budget cuts would be spread across the board, but most of the money was cut from the Police Department.

"I'm all alone. I'm in a corner of the woods. I have a dog, and I guess I can pretty much protect myself if I have to," said a Webster resident.

With just one officer left, the town has to rely on mutual aid from other towns or state police if there's a problem when the sole officer is off duty.

Homeowners said they worry response times could go from minutes to hours.

Selectman David Klumb said the town has hired a consultant to help figure out the fate of the Police Department.

"We're waiting for our report from our consultant, Don Gross, who has some good ideas, but they're not ready for prime time," Klumb said.

Klumb said the sole officer left is not going anywhere.

"We have the funds to keep the lieutenant," he said.

Residents said Webster said one officer is not enough.
