HARTFORD -- Connecticut's Department of Consumer Protection announced on Monday it is expanding its Hunt's beef recall to the company's spaghetti sauce.

Officials said the product may contain beef produced by Hallmark/Westland Meat Packing Co., of Chino, Calif., the same group that initiated a massive beef recall on Feb. 17.

Food inspectors are checking stores nationwide to ensure Hunt's Meat Flavored Spaghetti Sauce is removed from sale.

"For the second time in two weeks, I must urge consumers to check their cabinets," Consumer Protection Commissioner Jerry Farrell Jr. said. "While USDA has limited this to only a retail recall, consumers can return any unopened cans to the store for a full refund."

No illnesses have been reported, but health inspectors said consumers should avoid the product, even if it appears normal.

The Hallmark/Westland recall has been classified as Class II, which means there is a possibility that the recalled beef would cause adverse health effects if consumed.
