SAN DIEGO -- Local transfer students applying to enroll at San Diego State University are finding that even if they fulfill the requirements, there is no guarantee they will be admitted, 10News reported.

After graduating last fall, Cassandra Dump never expected she would still be sitting inside a classroom at Grossmont College.

"I believe I had everything completed," said Dump.

The 25-year-old Dump is one of nearly 56,000 students who applied for admission to SDSU.

"I'm one of 11,000 students in the local transfer area, and some of us were not admitted," said Dump.

All of the transfer students were vying for 2,877 spots.

"There are 100 students who thought they had met the requirements for transfer that were denied, that we're aware of at this time," said Grossmont College Chancellor Cindy Miles.

San Diego State University spokeswoman Gina Jacobs told 10News, "A lot of students who might have been accepted in the past were unfortunately not accepted this year."

State budget cuts and enrollment restrictions mean colleges around California could not expand enrollment.

But Dump said she counted on SDSU's Transfer Admission Guarantee.

"It's frustrating; I have to put my life on hold at this point," said Dump.

A representative for SDSU said admission is guaranteed if an applicant meets all the requirements necessary for an automatic transfer from the local community colleges, and these applicants may be missing some of those requirements.

For Dump it's a tough life lesson -- even when it comes to education, there are no guarantees.

SDSU has an appeals process for applicants who believe they have met all the requirements and were still denied a spot.

Dump said she planned to appeal.
