Prop. O To Help Local Schools Receive Makeover

When most school districts around the state are looking for ways to save money, Sweetwater Union High School District is getting ready to spend $644 million -- money raised by Proposition O.

Students at Chula Vista High School said the 60-year-old school's classrooms are showing their age.

"Some of them are falling apart. It's just that the classes are kind of small, there's many people in there, especially since the budget cuts now," said Chula Vista High student Robert Tankersley.

But now the school is getting ready for a makeover.

Arlie Ricasa, vice president of the Board of Trustees for the Sweetwater Union High School District said, "The school itself and the facilities that are needed have been needed for a long time. This is an opportunity to bring our academic facility -- our academic community -- into the 21st century."

Nine of the oldest schools in the Sweetwater High School District are to be renovated with $644 million in bond money raised by Proposition O.

"The community was willing to put their dollars and invest it into education," said Brian Ehm, Prop. O program manager for Chula Vista.

Ehm said, "… some of the older buildings on the Chula Vista High campus, these building were built in the 1950s. We're going to remodel them inside and out."

"The locker rooms are kind of getting run down. It's like they're kind of old and kind of beaten up and all that; they're rusty inside and all that, too," said Robert.

Ehm added, "These lockers have been around for 30 or 40 years, so we're going to do a complete remodel inside."

Chula Vista High School will also include a new performing arts center, so the entire community stands to take a big step forward.

Schools like Sweetwater High School, Chula Vista Middle School and Mar Vista High School are among those slated to undergo major transformations.

Below is a list of schools in the district scheduled for renovation in 2009:
  • Sweetwater High
  • National City Middle
  • Southwest High
  • Southwest Middle
  • Chula Vista High
  • Chula Vista Middle
  • Montgomery High
  • Mar Vista High
  • Hilltop High
